          William Pinkerton joined the secret service division of the U.

          S. Army in 1861. He served throughout the Civil War, mainly in the Army of Potomac. After the war, he became clerk in his father's office. His brother, Robert, later joined him.

          William was chief assistant and became head of the agency after the death of his father, Allan Pinkerton in 1884.

          William married Margaret Ashling of Blissfield, Michigan, Dec 14 1866. 'Maggie' was born May 6, 1847 in New York.

          Her parents were
