Mary Douglas Leakey (née Nicol) (February 6, 1913 – December 9, 1996) was a British physical anthropologist and the wife of Louis Leakey, famous for her discovery of Homo habilis and the "Laetoli footprints." Although she never completed a formal universityeducation, her archaeological excavations led to some of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century.

Life
Leakey was born on February 6, 1913 into the family of Cecilia Frere and Erskine Nicol, a landscape architect of Scottish descent. Due to the nature of her father’s job, the Nicol family frequently moved from place to place, living in France, Italy, and England.
